A fire in the heart of Fountain City snarled traffic but caused little damage thanks to the swift response of firefighters, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 8 a.m. in the rear of the building occupied by Dr. William Bailey at 112 Hotel Road, according to Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran.

A heating and air conditioning unit on the outside of the structure caught fire but was extinguished before the flames got inside the building, Corcoran said.

The row of storefronts on Hotel Rd. are directly across the street from Fountain City Park. They’ve contained a number of landmark businesses over the years, from The Station to an ice cream shop, The Creamery, which was itself destroyed by a fire several years ago.

“We were really lucky today,” Corcoran said.
