Both east and westbound lanes of Middlebrook Pike are closed this morning following a major traffic accident that left a tanker truck overturned and leaking fuel.

The accident happened about 9:22 a.m. at the intersection of Middlebrook and Liberty Street, west of downtown, according to Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran.

The driver of the diesel fuel tanker was being pulled from the leaking vehicle by civilians when firefighters reached the scene, Corcoran said.

The driver of a Dodge Ram was extricated by firefighters, he said.

Both drivers were taken to local hospitals with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

“KFD‘s hazmat unit was able to plug the the tanker’s rupture and contain the diesel spill from going into storm drain,” Corcoran said.

East and westbound traffic on Middlebrook has been rerouted. The road is expected to reopen after noon, he said.
