Industrial fire sparks evacuation

Nearly 200 workers were evacuated from the Keurig/Pepsi plant in East Knoxville

Nearly 200 workers were evacuated from an East Knox County manufacturing facility on Thursday afternoon when an industrial mishap caused a fire, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 2:14 p.m. at the Keurig/Dr. Pepper facility on Water Plant Road, according to a spokesperson from Rural Metro Fire Department.

“Power had been lost to the coffee grinder but the burners continued to heat the beans causing it to over pressurize and cause a subsequent fire,” the spokesperson said. “Crews were able to first extinguish the fire in the roof system then the processing area on the main floor. An estimated 200 employees were evacuated and no injuries were reported.”

The investigation into the blaze would be handled by “corporate officials,” the spokesperson stated.
