An ongoing wave of violent crime claimed its latest victim Thursday with the slaying of a man in East Knoxville, according to police.
The victim was identified as Wayne Humphrey, 41, of Knoxville on Friday, said Scott Erland, KPD spokesman.
The victim was found inside a residence at 2908 Brooks Ave. by Knoxville Police Department officers who had been dispatched to a shooting call, Erland said.
Humphrey had been shot once and was pronounced dead at the scene, Erland said in a press release.
“There are no suspects in custody at this time and the investigation is ongoing,” he said. “Updates will be provided as they become available.”
The latest bloodshed raised the number of slayings in Knoxville this year to 15, all of them involving firearms, police said. In comparison, by this time in 2020 there had been six homicides.
There were 37 homicides in Knoxville in 2020, more than the previous high of 35 in 1998.
