Police were trying to determine why two people were shot in an apartment in the Mechanicsville neighborhood early Monday morning.

Although no one was killed when a barrage of gunfire poured into the dwelling in the 400 block of Cansler Avenue at around 12:10 a.m., two of the five occupants were struck by bullets and rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, a police official said.

“The occupants of the apartment reported that they were inside when they heard gunfire coming from outside. A 29-year-old woman was struck in the arm and a 26-year-old man was struck in the face,” KPD spokesperson Scott Erland. “There were at least three other people inside of the apartment at the time of the shooting, but they were not struck by gunfire.”

The injuries were described by Erland as non life-threatening.

“Responding officers located a large number of shell casings in the street outside of the residence,” he continued. “Additional shell casings were found outside the residence near the front door.”

Several of the victims refused to cooperate with investigators, he said.

No suspects had been identified or arrested as of Tuesday, according to Erland.
