S. Knox apartment building damaged by fire

An overnight fire in South Knoxville caused heavy damage to the exterior of an apartment building but thankfully none of the residents lost their homes, authorities said Wednesday.

The blaze was reported just before 3 a.m. at The Stonewall Lofts apartments at 5022 Chapman Highway, according to Knoxville Fire Department officials.

“On arrival of the first KFD units, there was a fire discovered on the exterior of the 100 building. The first arriving company was able to quickly extinguish the fire with no extension into the inside of the structure,” said Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks.

“The occupant of the unit involved was awakened by the smell of smoke and began to investigate,” he continued. “Once she discovered the fire, she pulled the local fire alarm alerting the other occupants of the building.”

Although “the exterior of the structure has suffered considerable fire damage,” no one was hurt or displaced, Wilbanks said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said.
